In my first studio class, we were shown Christoph Niemann’s TED talk: “you are fluent in this language (and you don’t even know it)”. Christoph Niemann is a great designer whose creativity, innovation and dedication inspire me. In the video, he described art as a visual language that is widely used and even widely understood. It is the people’s understanding, he says, that makes his art possible. He uses simplicity in his art and uses the least amount of elements needed to convey a meaning or a message, such that, if even one element is removed the illustration loses its meaning. He says abstraction is his favorite element but needs to be used carefully and in the right amount.
In the second half, we were given 5 different topics, and we were to depict the topics or their asociated emotions using only lines and dots. It was a completely abstract activity that helped me open up my mind. All of this made me realize how emotions and ideas can be expressed through art, which need not be directly understood by others.
Here are the five topics and my abstract representation:
Journey to school

Looking out of the window
A pleasant breeze blowing through a jungle of buildings

MY HAPPY PLACE
waves, sunset and wind

WAKING UP IN THE MORNING
A very cloudy and dreamy mind
MY BESTFRIEND

Holding the walls from caving on me
stuck together through all the stages of life
Two parallel lines, different but bonded through a connection
