Today was the first class with our actual time faculty. We first discussed what we understood in the previous class and then started off with the first project for the subject. For that, we were asked to write down three narratives of time.
I was initially muddled about what she exactly meant by “narrative of time”. As I cleared my doubt with the faculty, I realized that we needed to write any narrative, either a personal experience or an imagination, that showed the existence or passage of time. Following is what I wrote.
Narrative-1
2018 was about to end and I was pretty excited for the new year. I had seen an advertisement of a ’12 month planner diary’ on Instagram, which I found very cute and inspirational. I wanted to get that diary because I thought I could use it for the coming year to be more positive and organized, and so I saved it. Days kept passing by while the diary still waited in my wishlist. I delayed it so much that it slipped my mind. Many days later, as I was scrolling through my feed again, I came across more of such diaries, which reminded me of that one. While I proceeded to open my ‘saved’ to check it, it slowly hit me that the diary I saved was for 2019 and the one that just appeared on my feed was 2020 edition.
As I kept delaying something, the year 2019 seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. It explains how the rate of time is so inconstant, relative and subjective.
Narrative-2
Just a day before new year’s eve, I went to buy a dress at a mall, for the NYE celebration. I was asked not to buy anything else.as it was christmas season there was a fine sale going on and most of the pretty stuff was already gone. Out of all the leftover dresses on sale, I found a top with a very lovely print and pattern. It was the very same top I loved but let go few months ago. Today time gave me a second chance to seize what I loved, at even better prize!
This shoes how time can even seem to wait for us and give second chances.
Narrative-3
Last night, I had my train from vadodara to mumbai scheduled at 11pm. we had some relatives over, and hence my parents were busy with them. At 10:15 i was ready to leave with my bags packed, for a change. i kept asking my dad to leave but we didnt leave until 10:40. he was too calm about it and swore to take me there in 10 minutes. At lat we dot right on time. it was a close save. My dad told me i would reach mumbai at 6, and so i kept an alarm for 5:15. But as i aroused from my sleep somewhere around 4:30, noticing so much movement happening i felt some anxiety, as if i were about to reach. it turned out that my stop was going to arrive at 5:00.
This narrative explains how sometimes time is so tricky yet precious, that it keeps us on our toes. A second of delay, and it can change the whole game.
We were further asked to represent each of these narratives in the form of storyboards, comprising approximately 10 thumbnails. I started ideating on my story boards, but couldn’t come up with a lot in today’s class.
