We began today’s class with a recapitulation of the fist semester, i.e photoshop and illustrator. We were divided in two groups and quizzed. I found a little bit difficulty because I did not remember all of the tools by their name and also because a lot of things I used to do was by trial and error.

After that we began with InDesign. Till now I knew nothing about it but today my concept about the purposes of different softwares became clear.

While Photoshop and illustrator are used mostly for one page artworks or posters, InDesign is used mainly for making multiple-page formats that involve a lot of text like editorials and magazines. . Although the functions of each are different their interfaces are very similar.

I learned there are two types of typography: artistic and paragraphic. Indesign only uses paragraphic typography which is used for more than one line instead of artistic that is used for single words or sentences. It uses vector graphics that helps us measure it in inches like illustrator. We were then asked to explore the tools of indesign, where I discovered that many of the tools were same as photoshop and illustrator and thus it wont be a very hard task to learn indesign.

The topic shifted back to illustrator and photoshop. we studied some minute differences between them, some of which had gone unnoticed in the past. for eg. the contrast in clipping mask. further, we learned some fascinating, new advanced tools in photoshop like creating and saving your own pattern and saving it and creating 3 dimensional objects that are radially symmetrical in nature.

Then she explained us some tools of indesign one by one, the layers and pages panels, the preflight panel, and some short cut keys. She discussed about the place holder tool, color gradient, etc. and gave us some little tips that we should remember.
