Today’s class was very interesting and fun. In the first lecture we watched a movie called the fabulous destiny of Amelie Paulain. My first impression of the movie was that it was very dull and old. I kept wondering what it was about and what it was trying to depict. On top of that, it was in French and thus demanded even more attention to be able to capture every dialogue along with the scenes.

I found the movie typically different from the present day movies in terms of cinematography as well as plotting. It involved less drama and dialogues. The dark color scheme of the movie also played a great role.

I found the character representation of Amelie to be very sweet. All the characters of the movie had a very interesting peculiarity which was portrayed in a humorous way. The film was largely based on Amelie’s life in which her introverted personality was reflected very well. I noticed how she lived alone and spent most of her time at home, avoiding interaction with everyone. she found pleasure in activities like skimming stones and dipping fingers in sacks of grains. She could’nt ever connect with any partner. And when she she finally fell for a man, she couldn’t accept her feelings and confront him. Moreover, she was a keen observer, which made her seem lost in her own world. She also seemed to have a habit of overthinking future situations. She had high empathy, even for strangers. She always tried to help those in misery and punish the unworthy, all in a hush. The fact that Amelie spent her childhood in seclusion was probably one of the cause of her introversion.

The best character of the movie, for me, was the wise glass man, who made the painting with a no faced girl and made Amelie associate herself with her. He showed the mirror to her and helped her understand herself. He told her ” you are not made of glass but if you let this chance go by you’ll become like my skeleton”, which pushed her to grab the chance of confronting her feelings and not regret for the rest of her life.
