We were first taken to the space and materiality workshop where we were introduced to all the hardware tools and machines. We were taught what each one of them was used for and the way they were to be used. We were told the safety rules and regulations of the workshop. I was quite amazed by the number of machines and the way they worked. Then we were taken back to the class. The professor discussed different materials with the class and the category they would fall into: manmade or natural. There were few that fell into neither as they were not completely synthesized but just a modification or value addition to a natural form like silk. We also learned about some that fell into both; like paper, leather, rubber etc So, the discussion made me understand the sources of different materials and thereby their properties and nature in terms of four categories: strength/durability, texture, conductivity and malleability/ ductility. This gave me an understanding of why the materials are used for their specific uses.
